Overview

Dr. John L. Buchanan focuses his practice on U.S. and international patent preparation and prosecution in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology fields for life science companies and academic institutions. His technological areas of expertise include small molecules, organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and process chemistry. In addition to the chemical arts, John has helped clients protect inventions involving proteins, antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates, nucleic acids, biomarkers, lateral flow devices, biosensors, sorbent polymer composite materials, and wound management biomaterials. Further, John assists clients with patentability, infringement, validity, and freedom-to-operate analyses.

Prior to law school, John gained more than 20 years of pharmaceutical industry experience as a medicinal and process chemist at The Upjohn Company, Cubist Pharmaceuticals, ARIAD Pharmaceuticals, and Kinetix/Amgen Inc.
